Carajillo Cocktail: The Ultimate Guide to This Delicious Drink

A classic Spanish coffee cocktail made with Licor 43 and espresso, served over ice. The perfect after-dinner drink or sophisticated pick-me-up.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 oz Licor 43
  • 1.5 oz Freshly Brewed Espresso (or strong coffee)
  • 34 Ice Cubes
  • Optional: Lemon or Orange Peel for garnish
  • Optional: A few drops of Angostura bitters for added complexity
  • Optional: Sugar or simple syrup to taste (if you prefer a sweeter drink)

Instructions

  1. Chill Your Glass: Chill your glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the other ingredients.
  2. Brew the Espresso: Brew a double shot of espresso (about 1.5 oz). Let it cool slightly.
  3. Add Ice to the Glass: Discard the ice water (if used) and add 3-4 ice cubes to your chilled glass.
  4. Pour in the Licor 43: Carefully pour 1.5 oz of Licor 43 over the ice.
  5. Gently Layer the Espresso: Slowly and gently pour the slightly cooled espresso over the Licor 43 and ice.
  6. Optional: Add Bitters and Sweetener: If using Angostura bitters, add a few drops to the top of the espresso. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add sugar or simple syrup to taste.
  7. Garnish (Optional): Garnish with a lemon or orange peel. Express the oils from the peel over the drink by gently squeezing it, then rub the peel around the rim of the glass before dropping it in.
  8. Stir (Optional): Stir gently to combine the ingredients, or enjoy the layered flavors.
  9. Enjoy Responsibly!

Notes

  • Coffee Strength: Experiment with different roasts and brewing methods.
  • Licor 43 Alternatives: Galliano L’Autentico is a good substitute.
  • Spice it Up: Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the espresso.
  • Mexican Coffee Variation: Add a splash of Kahlua or other coffee liqueur.
  • Iced Carajillo: Blend the ingredients with a handful of ice until smooth.
  • Hot Carajillo: Heat the Licor 43 and espresso in a saucepan over low heat. Do not boil. Pour into a mug and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
  • Experiment with Garnishes: Try adding a coffee bean, a chocolate shaving, or even a small sprig of rosemary.
  • Adjust Sweetness: Start with a small amount and add more as needed.
  • Use Quality Ingredients: Use freshly brewed espresso, good-quality Licor 43, and fresh ice.
  • Presentation Matters: Use a pretty glass, layer the ingredients carefully, and add a thoughtful garnish.
