Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (90g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup (170g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup (75g) chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) brewed espresso or strong coffee (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan with butter.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in the granulated sugar until smooth and glossy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing for fudgy brownies.
  6. If using, fold in the brewed espresso or strong coffee to enhance the chocolate flavor.
  7. Fold in the chocolate chips and chopped nuts (if using).
  8. Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, checking for doneness at the 25-minute mark. The edges should be set, and the center slightly soft.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Once cooled, cut into squares or rectangles, aiming for about 24 pieces.
  12. Serve with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, or a sprinkle of sea salt for an elevated treat.
