Homemade Beignets Guide: Master the Art of Perfectly Fluffy Treats

Enjoy the fluffy, golden goodness of homemade beignets, lightly dusted with powdered sugar. Perfect for breakfast or as a sweet treat, these pastries are best served warm alongside coffee or your favorite dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. A few lumps are okay.
  4. Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the dough out onto it. Knead gently for about 1-2 minutes until soft and slightly sticky.
  5. Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
  6. Lightly flour your work surface again.
  7. Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Cut the dough into squares, about 2-3 inches in size.
  9. Place the cut squares on a floured baking sheet, ensuring they don’t touch.
  10. In a deep pot, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
  11. Drop a few squares into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  12. Remove from oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  13. While warm, dust generously with powdered sugar.
  14. Enjoy fresh with coffee or hot chocolate, or with fruit preserves or chocolate sauce.
  15. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil is at the right temperature for optimal frying.
  • Beignets are best served fresh but can be stored for a short time.
