Indian Yogurt Drink: Discover the Health Benefits and Delicious Recipes

This refreshing Indian yogurt drink, or “chaas,” blends creamy yogurt with spices and a touch of sweetness, making it an ideal complement to spicy dishes or a cooling treat on warm days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups plain yogurt (preferably whole milk yogurt)
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 12 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black salt (or regular salt, to taste)
  • Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)
  • Ice cubes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Start by selecting a good quality plain yogurt. Whole milk yogurt is preferred for its creaminess, but low-fat yogurt can be used for a lighter version. Ensure it’s fresh and not too sour.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add the yogurt. Using a whisk or a hand blender, beat the yogurt until smooth and creamy, eliminating lumps for a silky texture.
  3. Gradually add the cold water to the yogurt while whisking. Adjust the amount of water based on your desired thickness. A medium consistency is refreshing and easy to drink.
  4. Once combined, add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness as needed.
  5. Sprinkle in the roasted cumin powder and black salt. Mix well to distribute the spices evenly throughout the yogurt mixture.
  6. Take a small sip to check for adjustments. Add more water if too thick or more spices if desired.
  7. If time allows, chill the yogurt drink in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to meld flavors. This step is recommended for the best taste.
  8. When ready to serve, take out the chilled drink. For extra coldness, add ice cubes to the serving glasses.
  9. Pour the yogurt drink into glasses, leaving space at the top. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and a sprinkle of roasted cumin powder for added flavor and presentation.
  10. Serve immediately and enjoy this refreshing yogurt drink, perfect for hot days or alongside spicy meals.

Notes

  • Experiment with flavors by adding fresh fruits like mango or strawberries, or try a savory version by omitting sugar and adding chopped cucumber and cilantro.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Stir before serving as it may separate.
  • This drink is rich in probiotics, aiding digestion and providing hydration, especially in summer.
