Sangria Granita Dessert: A Refreshing Twist on a Classic Treat

Enjoy a refreshing Sangria Granita, a frozen dessert that blends fruity red wine with fresh citrus flavors. Perfect for warm days, this light treat is garnished with fresh fruits and mint, making it an ideal addition to any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups red wine (preferably a fruity variety like Merlot or Garnacha)
  • 1 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed is best)
  • 1/2 cup simple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional, but adds depth)
  • 1 cup mixed fresh fruits (such as oranges, lemons, limes, and berries)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the red wine, orange juice, simple syrup, and brandy (if using). Stir gently to mix all the ingredients well.
  2. Add the tablespoon of lemon juice to the mixture and stir again until everything is well combined.
  3. Prepare the fresh fruits by slicing the oranges, lemons, and limes into thin rounds and cutting them into quarters. Wash the berries and leave them whole. Add all the prepared fruits into the wine mixture and gently stir to coat the fruits.
  4. Pour the sangria mixture into a shallow baking dish (a metal dish works best).
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or a lid to prevent unwanted odors from the freezer.
  6. Place the dish in the freezer and let it freeze for about 2 hours. After 2 hours, check the mixture; it should be starting to freeze around the edges.
  7. Using a fork, scrape the frozen edges into the center of the dish. Return the dish to the freezer.
  8. Continue to check and scrape the mixture every 30 minutes for about 3-4 hours, or until the entire mixture is frozen and fluffy.
  9. Fluff the granita one last time with a fork to ensure it’s light and airy.
  10. Scoop the granita into chilled dessert glasses or bowls.
  11. Garnish each serving with a few pieces of the fresh fruit and a sprig of fresh mint.
  12. Optionally, drizzle a little extra simple syrup or a splash of sparkling water over the top just before serving.
  13. Enjoy your Sangria Granita immediately! If you have leftovers, store them in the freezer and fluff with a fork before serving.

Notes

  • Choose the Right Wine: Opt for a fruity red wine that you enjoy drinking. Avoid overly tannic or oaky wines.
  • Adjust the Sweetness: Depending on your taste, adjust the amount of simple syrup as needed.
  • Experiment with Fruits: Feel free to use other fruits like peaches, strawberries, or apples for variety.
