Spicy Orange Margaritas: The Ultimate Guide to a Zesty Cocktail

Spicy Orange Margaritas with homemade spicy orange infused tequila. A unique twist on a classic cocktail with a kick of heat and citrusy depth.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 750 ml bottle of good quality tequila (blanco or reposado)
  • 23 dried chili peppers (such as arbol or guajillo), stemmed and seeded
  • 1 large orange peel (use a vegetable peeler to remove wide strips, avoiding the white pith)
  • 6 oz Spicy Orange Infused Tequila (see above)
  • 3 oz fresh orange juice
  • 3 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1.5 oz agave nectar (or simple syrup, adjust to taste)
  • Orange slices, for garnish
  • Lime wedges, for garnish
  • Chili lime salt (Tajin), for rimming the glasses (optional)
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Stem and seed the dried chili peppers. Remove wide strips of orange peel from a large orange, avoiding the white pith.
  2. Combine and Infuse: In a clean glass jar or bottle, combine the tequila, dried chili peppers, and orange peel. Seal tightly.
  3. Wait (Patiently!): Store in a cool, dark place for 3-7 days, tasting after 3 days to determine desired spiciness. Shake gently daily.
  4. Strain: Strain through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove solids.
  5. Prepare Your Glass (Optional): Rim your margarita glass with chili lime salt (Tajin).
  6. Combine the Ingredients: In a cocktail shaker, combine the spicy orange infused tequila, fresh orange juice, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar (or simple syrup).
  7. Add Ice: Fill the cocktail shaker with ice.
  8. Shake Vigorously: Seal the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds.
  9. Strain and Serve: Strain the margarita into your prepared glass filled with fresh ice.
  10. Garnish: Garnish with an orange slice and a lime wedge.
  11. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Adjust the Spice Level: Start with fewer chili peppers if you’re sensitive to spice.
  • Sweetness: Adjust the amount of agave nectar (or simple syrup) to your liking.
  • Different Tequila: Experiment with other types of tequila, such as añejo, for a richer, more complex flavor.
  • Smoked Salt: Try rimming your glass with smoked salt instead of chili lime salt for a smoky twist.
  • Muddle Some Fruit: Muddle a few slices of fresh orange or a few raspberries in the bottom of your cocktail shaker before adding the other ingredients for an extra burst of flavor.
  • Frozen Margarita: For a frozen margarita, simply blend all the ingredients with ice in a blender until smooth.
  • Make a Pitcher: To make a pitcher of Spicy Orange Margaritas, simply multiply the recipe by the number of servings you want to make. Combine all the ingredients in a pitcher and stir well. Keep the pitcher in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve. Add ice to the pitcher just before serving to prevent the margaritas from becoming watered down.
  • Use fresh juice for the best flavor.
  • Agave nectar can be substituted with simple syrup.
